Westpac Email Scam: 'Verify Your Details or Online Banking Will Be Restricted'

Scam emails pretending to be Westpac warn your Online Banking will be restricted unless you verify your details by a deadline, then link to a fake site.

What the scam looks like

Scammers are emailing Westpac customers to say their Online Banking access will be restricted unless they verify or update their personal details by a certain date. The email includes a link or button to do this.

The link leads to a fake website built to collect your banking and personal details.

What to watch out for

• An email telling you to verify your identity through a link. Westpac says it won’t ask you to do this.
• A deadline or threat that your access will be cut off.
• A long, unusual or unfamiliar web address behind the link or button.

What to do

• Don’t click the link or button. Delete the email.
• Go to Online Banking by typing westpac.com.au into your browser, or use the Westpac app.
• If you clicked the link, change your Online Banking password immediately and contact Westpac.

Where to report it

• Forward the email to hoax@westpac.com.au.
• Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.
