Fake 'Verify You're Human' Pages That Ask You to Paste a Command

ANZ warns of fake security check pages that ask you to copy and paste a command into your computer to "prove you're human", which installs malicious software.
What the scam looks like
Some websites show what looks like a normal security check, with wording such as “Verify you’re human” or “Security check in progress”. Instead of a simple tick box, the page tells you to copy a command and paste it into your computer, for example into a Run box or terminal.
Running that command lets the scammer install malicious software on your device, which can then steal passwords and banking details.
What to watch out for
- Any “human verification” that asks you to copy, paste or run something on your computer. Real checks never do this.
- Instructions to press a combination of keys and then paste.
- These pages can appear on websites you reach from search results, ads or links in messages.
What to do
- Don’t follow the instructions. Close the page.
- Keep your computer’s operating system and security software up to date.
- If you’ve already run a command, disconnect from the internet, contact ANZ through the ANZ App, and get your device checked.
Where to report it
- Contact ANZ through the ANZ App if you think your banking details are at risk.
- Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au, or to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au.
