Telstra Robocall Scam: 'Your Number Has Been Used Unusually'

Reported September 2026

A recorded call claiming to be Telstra says your number has been used unusually and will be cancelled within hours unless you press 9 or 1.

What the scam looks like

Telstra lists this as an active call scam. You get a recorded message saying your number has been used in an unusual or erratic way, and that it will be cancelled within a few hours. You’re told to press a digit, usually 9 or 1, to speak to someone.

Pressing the key connects you to a scammer, who will try to get personal details, payment or access to your accounts.

What to watch out for

  • An automated call warning that your phone service is about to be cut off.
  • Instructions to press a number to “stop” the cancellation.
  • Follow-up requests for one-time codes, passwords or payment. Telstra says it won’t call to ask for these.

What to do

  • Don’t press anything. Just hang up.
  • If you’re worried about your service, check the My Telstra app or contact Telstra using details you look up yourself.
  • If you gave a caller a code or password, change your My Telstra password and contact Telstra straight away.

Where to report it

  • Email the number that called and the time of the call to abuse@telstra.com.
  • Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.
