Is it a scam?
Most people looking a number up have just had a call they did not expect. These are the signs that matter more than the number itself.
- Urgency. A deadline, a threat of arrest, a fine, or an account about to be closed.
- A code they want read back. No bank, telco or government agency asks for a one-time code, PIN or password.
- Remote access. Being asked to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or anything like them.
- Moving money to keep it safe. No real bank will ever ask this.
- A parcel, a tax debt, a refund. The three stories used most often, because almost everyone is expecting one of them.
A local-looking number proves nothing. Caller ID is easy to fake, and scammers pick numbers that look local because people answer those. A number that checks out here can still have been spoofed by someone else.

What to do about it
- Do not call back a premium rate number, where the charge is the point of the call.
- Block it. On iPhone, open Recents, tap the info button and choose Block this Caller. On Android, open the Phone app, hold the number and choose Block.
- Report it to Scamwatch, which feeds the national picture even when nothing was lost.
- Leave a report here so the next person searching that number finds out what happened to you.
- Stop sales calls by listing your number on the Do Not Call Register. Free, and it covers mobiles as well as landlines.

Every number page combines the ACMA numbering register (service type, network, region and allocation status) with reports from people who actually received the call. The register tells you what a number is; the community tells you what it does.

How do I find out who called me in Australia?
Enter the number above. You get the service type, the network it was allocated to, the region for a landline, whether it is still in service, and any reports other people have left. For a business that publishes its number, you also see the business.
Is this free?
Yes, and there is no sign-up. Every number page is open to read, and leaving a report takes no account.
Can you tell me who owns a mobile number?
No, and neither can anyone else lawfully. Subscriber details for private individuals are not public. What is public is the numbering register, which says which carrier holds a block, and business numbers that organisations publish themselves.
The number shows no information. What does that mean?
Usually that nobody has reported it and it is not a published business number. The register details still tell you the type and region. If the number is not allocated to any carrier, that is a strong sign the caller ID was faked.
Can a phone number be faked?
Yes. Caller ID spoofing is straightforward, which is why a number that looks local, or even one that genuinely belongs to a real bank, does not prove who is calling. Hang up and call the organisation back on a number you looked up yourself.
How do I stop the calls?
Block the number on your phone, and report it to Scamwatch so the number is on record. Adding your number to the Do Not Call Register stops legitimate telemarketing, free for mobiles as well as landlines, though scammers ignore it.
